Our mid-day stop was at Honnignsvag, a small fishing village.
We boarded buses to take us to Nordkapp (North Cape), the farthest north point in Europe. The landscape on the drive to the cape was quite desolate. We are far above the tree-line so there is only snow and rocks and mountains to be seen.
At Nordkapp we first walked over to the “Children of the World” art installation. The installation consisted of art from seven children from all over the world…Tanzania. Brazil, Japan, Thailand, Italy, Russia and USA. The art was then made into round bronze reliefs and installed here at the ends of the earth.
Nearby was The Globe, another art installation that marks this northern point in Europe. Everyone vied to get their photo taken here.
The scenery at the cape was very dramatic.
We are currently traveling during the Polar Night, the time from November 27 to January 15 where the sun never rises above the horizon. So, for the very few hours when it is a little light it looks like there is a sunrise…or sunset.
But it never gets too light. And the light has a very strong blue hue to it.
The gift shop up here was quite extensive. We even found a rubber duckie in the colors of the Norwegian flag for our youngest grandson.
Back at town we stopped to admire some gnomes or trolls or whatever they were.
We were back on-board mid afternoon being rather dark.
and the ship announced that apple cake and cream was being served on the top deck. Turned out you had to pay for it so we opted to buy chocolate cake instead.
We spent the
afternoon working. Mary worked on photos
and the blog and Paul worked on resting all our passwords…Last Pass (the
password security program we used) managed to get hacked so we need to set up
passwords for everything again. What a
pain.
Tonight, was
our last night having dinner with Cory and Sherry (from Boston) and Gary and
Carolyn from Broome, Australia. Both
couples are only doing the cruise one way.
We will have new dinner partners tomorrow, we hope.
